A calmer desk without a bigger desk

A desk reset starts with removing what you do not use. Then separate frequently handled items from cables and accessories that only need occasional access.

Define the work zone

Keep the keyboard, mouse and writing area clear. Move spare stationery and infrequently used chargers into a labelled drawer or box. Check you can sit comfortably before adding anything beneath the desk.

Plan cable access

Identify which cable belongs to each device before grouping them. Keep ventilation openings clear and follow electrical equipment instructions. Do not tightly coil cables that are required to remain uncoiled during use.

Check clamps and knees

A clamp-on tray needs a compatible desk edge. Measure the top thickness, rear clearance and underside fittings. Ensure a tray cannot catch your knees, chair arms or a sit-stand mechanism.

Compare the approaches

OptionWhen to consider it
Cable clipsUseful for keeping loose ends within reach. Adhesive suitability varies by surface.
Under-desk trayCan lift cables off the floor; verify clamp fit and access to sockets.
Small desktop organiserUseful for daily items, but should leave enough space to work.
A mistake to avoid
Hiding plugs so thoroughly that you cannot reach or inspect them.

Before you choose

Check the exact model, usable dimensions, materials, care instructions and return terms on the retailer’s current listing. Similar names and photographs can conceal different sizes. Make a paper footprint if fit is tight, and start with one item before buying a set.
