Keep a narrow hallway clear

A hallway needs a clear route first and storage second. Start with the shoes, bags and keys used today rather than trying to store the entire household collection by the door.

Protect the walking route

Check the entrance door can open properly and that storage does not obstruct the route out. Measure at skirting-board level and higher up where a cabinet or handle may protrude.

Limit the daily collection

Allocate a small space per person for current shoes and bags. Move seasonal footwear elsewhere. A weekly reset often works better than adding another layer of storage.

Check the loaded footprint

An angled shoe rack can project further once shoes are on it. A cabinet also needs door-opening space. Follow the manufacturer anchoring instructions for furniture and choose fixings suitable for the wall.

Compare the approaches

OptionWhen to consider it
Shallow shoe rackMakes everyday pairs visible; loaded shoes may stick beyond the frame.
Shoe cabinetConceals footwear, but needs room to open and may require anchoring.
Small key trayCreates a landing place without adding a large piece of furniture.
A mistake to avoid
Choosing a cabinet by its closed depth and forgetting its opening arc.

Before you choose

Check the exact model, usable dimensions, materials, care instructions and return terms on the retailer’s current listing. Similar names and photographs can conceal different sizes. Make a paper footprint if fit is tight, and start with one item before buying a set.
